Treaty federalism

This is a public education document intended to inform Canadians of the historical and contemporary rights of Aboriginal peoples. It looks at the concept of treaty federalism as a means of federating First Nations into the Canadian Constitutional Framework which would be respectful of their historic relations and understanding, originally with the Sovereign in Great Britain and now the with the Crown-in-right of Canada. The paper review legal considerations, the rationale for the establishment of First Nation governments in Canada, the practical meaning of First Nation governments at the community level, as well as provides a commentary on the Canadian unity proposals.
