Leadership in Fiji

Dr. Nayacakalou presents a case study in depth of the functional leadership system in one particular village on the island of Kadavu, showing the continuities and changes in the modern context. This leads onto a study of two particular institutions - the Fiji administration and the Methodist Church, both of which he describes as "elaborate bureaucratic organisations." He turns next to urban Fijians and to the emergence of political leadership in urban areas. Conflict, integration and change are the last focus of Dr Nayacakalou's analysis, before he concludes with a lengthy discussion on the practical implications of his study.
