Everyone says being a teenager is tough, but seriously.

It’s Skye’s seventeenth birthday. Her parents are missing, and everyone seems to be in a terrible hurry to declare her an orphan. With worrying haste, her parents are pronounced dead, their house is emptied, and a memorial service takes place. Their weird next-door-neighbour is appointed Skye's new guardian. Nothing makes sense and, when Skye starts asking questions, all the carefully constructed lies that held her life together fall apart. She finds herself thrust into a mythical world, where stories shape reality and memories are tangible she can literally step into them.

At the heart of the novel lies the legend of the seannachie, the traditional storyteller and myth-keeper of the Scottish clans. The story combines realism and fantasy to draw readers into a world at once familiar and unsettling. Gods and mythical creatures walk in this world: they have been brought here by Skye’s mother, a seannachie who has become spellbound by her own story. Skye and her two best friends set out on a quest to rescue her—even if she no longer wants to be saved.
