Illusions of Innocence

Implicit in the rhetoric of American millennialism is the fundamental theme of restoration to a primitive, primeval innocence. Richard T. Hughes and C. Leonard Allen argue that from colonial times to the nineteenth century and even, in some cases, through the twentieth century, Americans have wanted to recover those 'first times' that stand behind our historical past.
