In the savage aftermath of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, the nun Hildegard of Meaux sets out on a perilous journey across the wilds of North Yorkshire. Her quest is to establish a small priory of her own but along the way she encounters five corpses swinging from a gibbet and a brutally murdered boy in the woods.
