About
The name Arbuthnott is a derivation of a Celtic word meaning little stream of virtue or healing power. The family which originally took this name was of Anglo-Saxon origin and took the name of their estate. The founder of the family was Hugh de Swinton who became the first Laird of Arbuthnott. One of his descendants was Robert Arbuthnott (ca. 1633) who was the eighteenth laird and became the first Viscount Arbuthnott. Presently, descendants live in the ancestral estate in Kincardineshire, Scotland as well as other parts of the world.
