Nach der Eroberung Aleppos durch Saladin 1183 und vor der Zerstorung der Stadt durch die Mongolen 1260 erlebte Nordsyrien eine Epoche groaer Bluete. Aufgrund sehr verschiedenartiger Quellen schildert dieses Werk in einer groaangelegten Synthese erstmals und unter allen Aspekten die damalige Geschichte Aleppos und seines Territoriums. Betont wird die politische Rolle des Sultans von Aleppo, aber intensiv behandelt werden auch das Besondere der zivilen und militarischen Institutionen, die Entwicklung des religiosen Lebens, des Unterrichtswesens, der Kultur und der Stadtentwicklung sowie der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung und die gesellschaftliche Vielfalt.
