It was notoriously revived by the writer Yukio Mishima on November 25, 1970, after kidnapping a general at sword-point at Tokyo military base and lecturing its soldiers on mutiny. What does it mean to revive an extinct element of a culture now allegedly postmodern? For such is what Mishima, often said to be the most Westernized of Japanese, actually did. And in doing so, he exposed the morbid nerve of fundamentalism. His action was prophetic of events to come.
