Letters of a Reluctant Confederate

John Calhoun Birdwell's letters, written home to his wife, Adaline, during the Civil War, reveal his deep love for his wife and children. The letters also reveal that he was not entirely happy about serving in the Confederate Army. After all, he was thirty-three years old and had a wife and five children with whom he wished to be spendong his time. Adaline's letters to John give the reader a glimpse into the problems entailed in running the family farm in a husband's war time absence. Then, at the end of December 1862, John's letters abruptly stop.
