From the Ground Up: A Horticultural Guide for Northern Gardeners is an essential reference book for northern gardeners. It includes discussion of specifically northern issues and challenges, from soils and climate to problems with moose and bears. The bulk of the book is an encyclopaedic but very readable listing of suitable Zone 3 trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, fruits, berries, herbs and vegetables. Plant listings are extensive and offer interesting and relevant details on the thousands of hardy – and borderline hardy - plant choices that gardeners and landscapers might come across in garden centers and catalogues. This reference will take much of the guesswork out of choosing and siting plants in cold-climate short-season gardens. It is based on years of testing and hands-on research and experimentation by the author, and is destined to become a northern gardening classic.
