About
Throughout colleges and universities, graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) play an integral role in undergraduate education. In English departments, GTAs are often responsible for teaching freshman composition, a course comprised of writers of varying skills, learning abilities, backgrounds, and motivation. Novice GTAs unquestionably face several challenges in undertaking their job; therefore, the training of GTAs is of great importance. This study seeks to promote insights about GTA training and recognize the voice of GTAs, emphasizing the value of their experience. As such, three English GTAs from Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) were interviewed regarding their training. An analysis of their responses helps to provide recommendations for the Department of Language & Literature's English GTA training program. Recommendations for further study are included as well. As a former GTA at TAMUK, I also share my reflections regarding my experience. The significance, features, and history of GTA training are also discussed.
