Programmers create a thought-reading tool for use by people who suffer from "locked-in" syndrome, which is usually caused by a brain hemorrhage. Although paralyzed, they are able to understand what is going on but are unable to communicate. The tool allows them a way to let people, especially their caretakers, know what they need, and to enjoy a thought-reading conversation with anyone who has access to the tool. People who will use it for nefarious purposes learn of it's existence and become obsessed with possessing it. A blurred definition of what is good and what is evil ensues, leading to an ending that disregards modern moral codes.
