This volume gives a complete review of the present status of microgravity research. It includes the results of the D-1 Spacelab mission, the last microgravity-dedicated mission before the Challenger disaster. Close to 50 European scientists have cooperated in the book's preparation, and this synergetic approach has greatly enhanced the depth and the scope of the contributions. Each individual chapter first presents the theoretical background to justify microgravity experiments, then follows a review of the experiments performed and a critical discussion of the results obtained. Finally, recommendations for future activities are put forward.
