Après avoir mené des recherches d'anthropologie politique en Afrique centrale et à Madagascar, Gérard Althabe a initié un courant de recherches anthropologiques dans les lieux centraux de la société française (périphéries urbaines, administrations et entreprises). Il a ensuite étendu ses investigations en Argentine et en Roumanie. Gérard Althabe raconte son cheminement à Rémi Hess, disciple de René Lourau (1933-2000), son ami d'enfance. A travers sa méditation, ce sont tous les problèmes des sciences humaines qui se sont posés à sa génération qui se trouvent réfléchis et exposés à la génération suivante.
