Army and Society in Ptolemaic Egypt

In part I, chapter 1 assesses the impact of the first settlements of Greek soldiers in the three centuries before the Ptolemaic dynasty and chapter 2 evaluates the role of the Egyptians within the Ptolemaic army and the plausible number of Greek soldiers. Chapter 3 identifies a period of reshaping of the military structures and connects it with the changing nature of warfare, mobilization, demobilization, and military costs. Part II is devoted to the socio-economic role of soldiers and officers, notably to the cleruchic system. Part III examines the connection between the army and the Egyptian temples and considers the army as a place of interaction between Greeks and Egyptians.
