These inscriptions were surrounded in mystery and esoteric knowledge of their creation and meaning, and deal with a number of different subjects concerned with Assyrian kings and their achievements and exploits. John Russell emphasises the importance of reading and understanding these texts in their original context. He discusses the royal residences and administrative centers of the Assyrian kings between Assurnasirpal II (883-859 BC) and Assurbanipal (668-631 BC) and their associated inscriptions.
