From Bondage to Freedom: Slave Religion and the Slave Preacher

This study's objective was to determine the role of the slave preacher within the field of slave religion. Research of slave narratives, memoirs, and autobiographies were used to determine time frame and explore the experiences, activities and ministries of slave preachers. This study's conclusions indicate that slave preachers, male and female, were active in the spread of Protestant Christianity throughout the African American community in the century preceding the Civil War. In addition to their ministries, slave preachers also participated in social campaigns to free slaves and uplift their communities through education and economic stimulation.
