John Courtney Murray, S.J. was a Catholic theologian and editor of Theological Studies in the 1950's. His controversial views on the separation of church and state led to his being silenced by Rome in 1955. He was named a "peritus" at the Vatican Council II where he contributed to the framing of "Declaration on Religious Freedom."
