Louisa March leaves her New England home for a Civil War hospital in Washington, D.C. to volunteer as a nurse. Unprepared for the horrors she encounters in the wards, she finds solace in the company of a soldier in her care. Cole, severely wounded, is slowly nursed back to health by Louisa. Surrounded by the sick, the dying, and the dead, Cole looks forward to lively and flirtatious conversations with Louisa during her rounds. Friendship grows into love for these kindred spirits, but, as Cole recuperates, his impending return to the war draws nearer. Attempting to delay the inevitable, Cole tries to help Louisa answer a critical question: Why is much needed opium disappearing from the hospital's supplies? The search for answers leads them into a world of espionage, drug trafficking, and murder that puts Cole in the crosshairs of a Rebel sniper's rifle.
