About
The Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Highways is responsible for the safe design, construction, operation and maintenance of the state highway system and the administration of the state's local roads and streets program, the third largest in the nation. The state highway system includes 17,000 miles of roads and 8,000 bridges. It is part of Illinois' total system of state and local roads encompassing 139,000 miles and 26,000 bridges.
