Squatting Dystopia: Performative Invasions of Real and Imagined Spaces in Contemporary Brazil

The case studies range from a highly interactive "environmental" theater production by the legendary "Teatro Oficina," which is based on an epic that narrates the massacre of land squatters at the turn of the century, to a site-specific play by "Grupo XIX de Teatro" that deals with the hygienization of collective immigrant housing around the same period. These are juxtaposed with the artivist practices of artists' collectives that engage directly with the squattings of the "Roof-less," a housing movement that has grown considerably in the last decade.
