Author Gámez del León research work on romantic painter Manuel Ocaranza (Uruapan, Mxico 1841- d. 1882), best remembered as the 19th century master of the romantic painting genre of costumbrista. The present text is a detailed account of the historical context as well as the symbolic implications of Ocaranza's artwork, particularly his representation of the female body and its relation with nationalistic and virtue values, his liberal political convictions and his later bohemian attitude in a disappointing government. The present texts provides a better understanding of the permanent relationship between painters, poets and literates, like Ocaranza and poet Jos Mart who shared metaphors in the creation of painting style full of unusual characteristics. Includes a poem by Jos PeÑn y Contreras. Accompanying CD includes a catalog of Ocaranza's complete body of work, from his first academic paintings to his last almost modernistic work.
