The gallery belonging to General Director Gerstenberg is by far the most important collection of modern painting in Berlin; nowhere else in Germany can one study the splendor of the nineteenth century in such detail," rhapsodized Max Liebermann in 1921. Comprising more than 2,100 works, Otto Gerstenberg assembled after 1900 a collection of paintings and prints of international standing that reflected the glamour of Berlin as a metropolis of private art collecting. Gustave Courbet, Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Eugène Delacroix, Franciscon de Goya, Max Liebermann, Édouard Manet, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec were just some of the illustrious names represented in the collection.
