In addition to mediating immune evasion, we found that the activity of the T4SS influences the immune response to Brucella by polarizing the immune response. Mice infected with the virB mutant showed a reduced Th1 polarization of the immune response when compared to mice infected with Brucella wild type. Furthermore, we showed that some components of the T4SS serve as targets of immune recognition. VirB12, but not VirB1, VirB5 or VirB11, elicited specific antibody responses during infection in experimentally infected mice and goats, and in natural hosts of known serology status.
