Long Days of Small Things

Moms are invited to see the physical seasons and tasks of motherhood as inherently spiritual—not busywork that keeps them from a spiritual life. If God used birth, life, and death to redeem his Creation, who has a front-row seat to his work if not mothers? For moms of young children, it’s hard to find time to shower, much less sharpen spiritual practices. Surrounded by crackers, laundry, and crayon-smeared bills, it’s been months since moms have sat through a church service undisturbed. With last Sunday’s Bible study buried under diapers, moms often feel discouraged and wish we could get it together. Catherine invites moms to the spiritual journey our Creator prepackaged into motherhood. Instead of more “to dos” and “shoulds,” she pictures pregnancy, nurture, and surrender with the daily tasks of walking, driving, folding laundry, and invites mothers to approach them mindfully. Weaving biblical teaching, spiritual disciplines, and stories of motherhood, Catherine invites her sleep-deprived reader to see these daily tasks as rich spiritual practices.
