Based on his own novel, Richard Matheson adapted this screenplay for the 1981 film. The story begins when a contemporary playwright becomes obsessed with the portrait of a beautiful woman on a hotel wall. He learns the woman was an actress who performed there in 1912 and he discovers a way to transport himself back in time to meet her. He goes back and they begin a passionate romance. But, at any moment, if the playwright should remember his previous existence, he will be torn away and pulled back to his own time.
