Anton Rheba, Barbara's father, is in love with Clara Haines, his secretary, but she is married to Ronald Haines. Michael is asked to help with the situation as a human-relations expert, and Barbara tries to help also, without being asked. Contrasting a new love with a mature love, the portrayals are of the human spirit, amid the passionate and overpowering forces that destroy the soul and grind ambitions to dust.
