Twelve years ago, Brandi Lakeman was snatched from her backyard. More than a decade later, the girl was miraculously recovered, yet her abductor remains at large. Now her mother, funeral director Blair Emerson, is determined to rebuild their lives, returning to Blair's childhood home of Live Oak, Texas. But their move to the friendly town cannot restore normalcy. Brandi, driven by compulsions, bears the scars of her traumatic childhood. And Blair, struggling with her own obsessions with her daughter's safety, becomes a witness in an arson investigation that has divided Live Oak. Evidence points to an environmentalist who has alienated much of the town. But Blair reports seeing a teenage boy running from near the latest fire. What she doesn't say is that he resembled the grandson of her beloved friend—a troubled teen struggling to hide his own painful past.
