It portrays the experiences of the author as a child soldier. The book provides the firsthand account of the author’s early life when he was a child soldier during the 1990s while the civil war was on in Sierra Leone. When Beah was only 12 years old, he ran away from his native village. He left the village after it had been attacked by the rebels. After that he was never reunited with his immediate family. Sierra Leone was a war filled country in those days. The young boy wandered from place to place, trying to get some place somewhere. Eventually, he was compelled to join an army unit.
