Orozco's second book of revisionist history on controversial 19th-century Mexican president. Text seeks to redeem figure of Porfirio Diaz, generally reviled dictator who wielded presidential power from 1876 until he was overthrown in 1910 at beginning of Mexican revolution. Previous volume (our item number 183748) stresses Diaz' achievements -creating modern Mexico, improving communications, beautifying cities, paying off national debt and bolstering sense of national patriotism- while this tome explores political and social reasons that led to his subsequent characterization as villain, particularly their importance in constructing counter-myths of Mexican revolution.
