The primary aim of my dissertation is to give a comprehensive account of Descartes' view on sensory perception. In the dissertation, I examine his views in relation to scholastic views on sensation, his own mechanistic science, and other related issues such as the mind-body union. I argue that the view on sensory perception adopted by Descartes is a scholastic view that has been tailored to fit his physics, and that his view on sensation in general can be understood only by taking seriously his scholastic roots and by appreciating the importance of his physics.
