LITTLE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH COUNTRY CHURCH

A narrative history of the English country church from its origins in Anglo-Saxon times to its uncertain future in the twenty-first century. The author takes us on a journey - historical, social and spiritual - to explore what men and women experienced through the ages when they went to church on Sunday. Despite the dramatic changes that took place inside it over the centuries, the parish church is the symbol of continuity in the English countryside. But over the last few decades the building itself has come under threat and Roy Strong concludes that, in order to survive, the church will need to find a new role within a changed rural community.
