Peristyl und Polis

Peristyle buildings that served public functions were a common feature of every Greek city. This is the first work to provide a comprehensive examination of this architectural form. It critically scrutinizes the reconstruction, dating, and interpretation of peristyle buildings. In addition, it addresses the reciprocal relationship between architecture and society. The authors successfully demonstrate that these buildings, which are closed off to the outside but open in the center, were constructed for exclusive groups of users. Thus, the volume provides a new perspective on the development of the Greek city from the Classical era onward.
