Saint Justin Martyr (ca. 100-ca.165) was an early Christian apologist intending to demonstrate the Greeks’ debt to Hebrew monotheistic writings. He wrote two apologies and some other texts, but most of his works are lost. Because of his reputation, a number of feeble apologies were also attributed to him; of these the De monarchia and Cohortatio ad Graecos (see Bib# 392917/Fr# 102 in this collection), unusually replete with Christian or Jewish forgeries, are occasionally a useful source of fragments from authentic pagan dramas. The present work has parallel Greek and Latin texts, including the spuria. These forgeries are exposed by Bentley in his pathbreaking and scarce Epistola ad Joannem Millium (1691, see Bib# 597436/Fr# 94).
