Dictators need to control the past and archaeology is one means to achieve it. These nine theoretical papers, mostly from the 67th Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology held in Denver, examine the relationship between politics and archaeology around the Mediterranean, particularly the actvities and agendas of Italian archaeologists in the first half of the 20th century. Contributors examine Italian archaeology in Libya, Italian excavations of Butrint, Albania, in search of Aeneas, Franco's excavations in Spain, the Turkish quest for the Hittites, Greek archaeology during terms of dictatorship and the influence of dictators on archaeological research which inevitably involved archaeologists `dealing with the devil'.
