The Log Cabin Mine was once the largest gold-producing mine in California. It was state-of-the-art and could both extract and process the gold from the quartz ore far beneath the surface. Now, all that remains of the once bountiful mine are decaying buildings, equipment ravaged by time and vandals, and memories. Gold Mine in the Sky chronicles the colorful history of the Log Cabin Mine, from its humble beginning in 1890, to its pre–World War II heyday, to the modern efforts to restore the mine and preserve its rich legacy. However, Gold Mine in the Sky offers more than simply a collection of names and dates; it tells the story of a man, his family, and the people of the small town of Lee Vining, whose lives were once, and will always be, inextricably linked to the Log Cabin Mine.
