Durante la Conferenza Internazionale dei Liberi Pensatori, che ebbe luogo a Londra tra il 25 e il 27 settembre 1881, il medico e filosofo materialista tedesco Ludwig Büchner espresse ad Edward B. Aveling, noto ateo anticlericale londinese, il desiderio di conoscere Charles Darwin. Aveling inviò pertanto un telegramma al grande naturalista inglese con la richiesta di un breve colloquio. Questi accettò e il 28 settembre 1881 i due atei si recarono a Down House, ospiti a pranzo dell’agnostico Darwin. A baluardo della fede di Emma, moglie di Charles, venne invitato anche il reverendo John Brodie Innes, vecchio amico di famiglia. Il libro rievoca nei dettagli sia i fatti accaduti a Londra e a Down House il 27 settembre, sia le conversazioni scientifico-teologiche avvenute in casa Darwin il giorno successivo.
