A la suite de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'Indonésie déclare son indépendance en 1945. De nombreux Néerlandais sont rapatriés aux Pays-Bas. Néanmoins, Elisabet Frissart, une métisse néerlandaise-indonésienne, refuse de quitter sa terre natale et se considère totalement indonésienne. La jeune femme fait donc tous les efforts possibles pour rester au pays, mais c'est l'échec. Finalement, elle renonce à son projet initial car les événements la contraignent de prendre aussi le chemin des Pays-Bas.
