Nostalgia and retro are influential forces in shaping popular culture. Music from the 1980s is being remembered in contemporary popular culture through both nostalgia and retro-fueled revival movements. In this thesis, I explore how nostalgia and retro work separately and jointly to frame how music from the 1980s is perceived and remembered. This is explored by providing an overview of the theoretical frameworks through which nostalgia and retro are discussed, detailing mass media representations of 1980s music nostalgia and revival movements, and conducting interviews with informants to obtain their perspectives on the representation of music from the 1980s as well as revival acts associated with the 1980s retro movement.
