Jimmy, Dan, Livy and Beatrice grow up together in a small town at the turn of the century and forge a bond that lasts a lifetime. Life is placid and static in South Kenton with all love, hate, festering secrets and fostored traditions common to small towns, until an underlying abscess takes shape, roiling with hate, suspicion, gossip, strange and twisted behavior, and eventually, brutal murder. Raised by his drunkard father in a two-room shack behind the Blacksmith works, Dan is mared as a victim from his earliest years. In him, the town has found a man "to crush and rend and hurl and spit upon." Quiet and solitary, all Dan longs to do is to look at life and watch it pass......
