In the early 1900s, a fierce and daring bandit society raided at will throughout the Northeast region of Brazil. They were ruled by a charismatic leader known as the Lantern with his woman, Maria Bonita, always by his side. After nearly two decades the bandits known as the cangaceiros were finally wiped out by the Brazilian authorities. Some were beheaded, others captured and imprisoned, and some escaped to assume new identities and live on anonymously.

Sergio although Brazilian by birth is now completely Americanized following college and a successful career in his adopted Miami, Florida. His return to his homeland is meant to rediscover roots and re-establish a long neglected relationship with his parents. Throughout his quest he is tormented by the ghost of a murdered woman he once loved. In Brazil, he will discover a new love and find himself re-clarified by the confessions of his elderly father and mother about their incredible previous lives.
