Near-contemporary (1847-1848) defenses by ‘Sobieski Stuart’ of the genuineness of the Vestiarium Scoticum (see Bib# 4103405/Fr# 734 in this collection), which was restudied and finally dismissed in 1980 by D.C. Stewart and J. C. Thompson, Scotland’s Forged Tartans: An Analytical Study of the Vestiarium Scoticum (see Bib# 4103407/Fr# 736). The present work contains a facsimile of a letter from John Sobieski Stuart to the Edinburgh bookseller James Stillie, concerning a possible new edition of the Vestiarium. The work, presumably edited by Stuart, reprints the Quarterly Review article by George Skene and Mackintosh Mackay, together with Stuart’s defense, originally separately published.
