Opowiadania ukazuja losy rosyjskich Zydów, w szczególnosci odeskich i obejmuja czasy II wojny swiatowej, powojenna epoke stalinowska, lata szescdziesiate i siedemdziesiate XX w., kiedy to zaczela sie walka o prawo do emigracji, wreszcie - odbudowanie zycia na obczyznie. Autentyzm relacji kaze przypuszczac, ze autor oparl sie przede wszystkim na przezyciach wlasnych i swoich bliskich. Widzimy wiec swiat najpierw oczami kilkuletniego chlopca, pózniej uczniami szkoly sowieckiej, wreszcie - dorslego mezczyzny, próbujacego najpierw znalezc miejsce w kraju, w któym sie urodzil, a potem na emigracji w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

This volume is devoted to the fate of Russian Jews, in particular, those coming from Odessa. The stories  cover the time of World War II, post-war Stalinist period, the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century, when Soviet Jews began to struggle for the right to emigrate, and finally the time they tried to rebuild their lives in exile. The authenticity of the characters lets us to assume that the author relied primarily on his own experiences and that of his loved ones. Thus we see the world first through the eyes of a young boy, later a student at the Soviet school, and finally a grown-up man, who is trying to find his place in the country where he was born, and later in exile in the United States. The stories in this volume have also appeared in English translation as chapters of the book, Shush! Growing up Jewish under Stalin, and in such periodicals, as International Quaterly, Nimrod International, The New Rennaisance, and others.
