How to Manage Roles & Moderate Your Book Club

Every club member has a role, and each one builds on the powers of the role below it:

• Member — the default role. Can read, post, and react in the club chat.
• Moderator — content moderation. Everything a member can do, plus deleting other members’ messages.
• Co-admin — shares most of the organizer’s powers. Everything a moderator can do, plus removing or banning members and managing the ban list.
• Organizer — the club’s owner (also called the host elsewhere in Readfeed). Everything a co-admin can do, plus assigning roles and transferring ownership — only the organizer can do those two things.

One thing every role can do: delete their own messages, any time.

Only the organizer can change roles. Open the club and tap Members to see the full member list, then open the ⋮ menu next to the member you want to promote or demote and choose Make co-admin or Make moderator.

To return someone to a plain member, choose Remove role from the same menu. Changes take effect immediately — there is no separate save step.

Any member can delete their own message at any time — open its action row and choose Delete this message.

A moderator, co-admin, or organizer can additionally delete any other member’s message when it breaks the rules or derails the conversation. Deleted messages don’t just vanish — they’re replaced with a “Message deleted” placeholder so the conversation stays easy to follow.

Removing and banning need a higher bar than deleting a message, so they’re limited to co-admin and organizer — a plain moderator cannot remove or ban anyone.

From the Members list, open a member’s ⋮ menu and choose Remove from club (they can rejoin later unless banned) or Remove & ban… (also blocks them from rejoining or being re-invited until someone unbans them). Banning lets you add an optional reason first.

Two guardrails apply automatically: a co-admin cannot act on another co-admin — you can only manage members who rank below you — and the organizer can never be removed or banned. To hand off a club you no longer want to run, transfer ownership instead (see below).

Co-admins and the organizer can see everyone currently banned from the club. Open Members and look for the Banned section.

To let someone back in, find them in the Banned section and choose Unban. Once lifted, they can rejoin with an invite link or code like any other new member.

If you need to hand the club off — stepping back, or passing it to a true co-founder — the organizer can transfer ownership to any other member. Open Members, choose Transfer ownership… from that member’s menu, and confirm.

The transfer is immediate: the member you chose becomes the new organizer, and you’re automatically demoted to co-admin — so you keep most of your former powers, just not the ability to assign roles or transfer ownership again.
